The Retirement of Cannon Mountain’s Aerial Tramway

The iconic Cannon Mountain aerial tramway.

After more than four decades of service, Cannon Mountain’s iconic aerial tramway will make its final run this fall. Known for its bright red and yellow cars and sweeping views of Franconia Notch, the tram has been a defining feature of the White Mountains for generations. Its retirement marks the end of an era—and the beginning of something new.

A Legacy in the Sky

First opened in 1938, Cannon’s original tramway was the first passenger aerial tram in North America. The current system, installed in 1980, has carried more than nine million passengers up and down the mountain over the years.

Whether you’re riding in summer for the views or in winter to access ski terrain, the experience is unforgettable. In just under seven minutes, the tram climbs to the 4,000 foot peak, offering panoramic vistas of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and even Canada on clear days.

It’s more than just a lift—it’s a piece of New England history.

What’s Next?

After 45 years of continuous operation, the current tramway has reached the end of its practical lifespan. While it remains safe, New Hampshire state officials have decided to retire the system and move forward with a full replacement.

The decision wasn’t made lightly, but it reflects a long-term investment in the future of Cannon Mountain.

A new aerial tramway is already in the early planning stages. The state has allocated funding for design and development, with construction expected to begin in the near future. While timelines are still being finalized, the goal is to install a modern system that preserves the scenic experience that visitors have come to love.

During construction, tram service will pause, likely for a couple of years. Winter summit access will still be possible via chairlifts, but there will be no summer or fall tram rides until the new system is in place.

Last Chance to Ride

If you’ve ever wanted to ride the current tram—or revisit a favorite memory—this fall is your final opportunity. Although the exact closing date hasn’t been announced, the tram is expected to run through the end of the 2025 foliage season, likely wrapping up in late October.

It’s a perfect time to take in one more ride, especially with peak autumn colors painting the landscape.
