Blending European ski-hotel elegance with New England spirit in this South Peak Resort mountain lodge

At South Peak Resort, mountain living means more than a scenic view. It’s about crafting homes that feel both timeless and tailored to their setting. Nestled into the slopes of South Peak in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, this recently completed mountain lodge takes that vision to heart. Designed as a modern mountain lodge, it balances the refined spirit of a European ski retreat with the warmth, durability, and playful character that make a home truly welcoming.

Working closely with the homeowners, Longfellow’s design team created a retreat that captures the drama of its alpine surroundings. At the same time, it delivers comfort and hospitality at every turn. The result is a home that feels at once contemporary and connected to the traditions of mountain living. It’s an embodiment of what makes South Peak such a special place to call home.

Gathering at the Heart

The great room anchors the home, its vaulted wood ceiling and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace creating both grandeur and intimacy. A broad window wall captures mountain light and sweeping views while drawing gatherings close around the hearth. The adjoining kitchen continues the balance of modern and warm. Painted maple cabinetry in soft grey keeps the perimeter calm, while a walnut-paneled island reads as fine furniture. Quartz surfaces were chosen with intent—Calacatta Oro along the edges for brightness, Carbo Brushed on the island for contrast—punctuated by black mesh inserts and a plastered hood that keeps the sightline refined.

Hospitality extends to a companion wet bar where design details double as conversation starters. Metal-and-glass shelving frames a deer mount in a witty nod to après-ski tradition, while a hammered-zinc prep sink and beverage fridge make entertaining effortless.

Crafted for Living

Guest accommodations were designed with equal care. Built-in bunks, brightened with crisp white rails, maximize space without sacrificing style. On the lower level, a recreation zone with additional bunks and a second bar offers even more flexibility, ensuring the home can host lively gatherings with ease.

Everywhere, craftsmanship is evident in the details. The island’s inset cabinetry demands millimeter precision, while frameless perimeter cabinets create uninterrupted lines. Mantels, beams, and millwork share proportions and finishes, tying each space together. Even the bunk assemblies integrate drawers, stairs, and guardrails into one seamless millwork object.

Shaped by the Land

Beyond the walls, the steep topography became a design opportunity. Engineered rockery walls terrace the slope, stabilizing soils while creating purposeful outdoor zones: a firepit for gathering, a hot tub for unwinding, and a tucked-away sauna for quiet retreat. Stormwater is managed through a stone infiltration system designed to handle a 25-year event, ensuring durability and protecting the land.

Contemporary Mountain Living

What makes this home remarkable is its coherence. From whimsical touches like vintage lift chairs and playful wallpapers to the refined discipline of cabinetry lines and material choices, every detail of this mountain lodge contributes to a consistent visual story. The result is a benchmark for contemporary mountain living in New England—tailored, welcoming, and deeply connected to its South Peak setting.
